The CAAC athletic directors recently approved a proposal to change the format and pairing formula for the annual CAAC Boys 2014 Soccer Cup. The changes were the results of several meetings and discussions with league coaches who have favored a more comprehensive seeding plan for the Cup rather than league standings only.
With the new 20-school three-division alignment for the CAAC in 2014-15, the Soccer Cup will now be conducted in two divisions, Gold and Silver. There will be eight teams in each of the two divisions in seeded, bracketed play, the remaining four teams not in the championship division will play round robin games with each other.
The major change in the format will be a seeded event, with the three division leaders automatically qualifying for the Gold Division, the remaining 13 schools and first round match-ups determined by a seed meeting of coaches. Criteria will involve league and overall record, strength of schedule, head to head results and other factors articulated by each coach. The higher seeded team will host games in the first two rounds with the Gold and Silver Cup Championship games to be held at the same location.
Dates will be Oct. 1-2 for first round games, Oct. 6-7 for second round games and third round games and championship games Oct.8- 9. Similar changes to format are planned for the 2015 girls spring Soccer Cup after the CAAC experiences the new format this fall for the boys. A travelling trophy will also be created for the Cup in both seasons.
